Most small business owners started their business to do meaningful work — to build something, to serve customers well, to create something that didn't exist before. What they end up spending most of their week on is something else entirely: customer service emails, invoicing, scheduling, status updates to clients, coordination with vendors, and the dozens of small administrative tasks that a business accumulates as it grows.

This is the owner-as-operator trap: the business needs an operator — someone to keep everything running — and in a small business, that person is almost always the owner.
